Daniel Martinez climbed onto the podium following his #PinkArgyle debut. The 21-year-old covered the flat, fast 25-kilometer Colombian national time trial course in Medellin in 28:48, six seconds slower than the newly crowned champion Egan Bernal. It is the first podium of the 2018 season for EF Education First – Drapac p/b Cannondale.
“It was never the plan to target the time trial today, so the result was a wonderful surprise,” said Martinez. “The ride was good, the legs are good and the level is good.”
The day was an extra special one for Martinez. His parents were on hand to see their son’s first race in his new team colors.
“I was excited today,” said Martinez. “Being a part of the #PinkArgyle team feels like a dream. I’m very happy.”
Martinez will team up with compatriots Julian Cardona and Rigoberto Uran for Sunday’s road race.
“It’s very important to us to put in a real effort on Sunday to try to win the national jersey,” said Martinez. “The road race is Rigo’s hometown and the course suits him with a good final sprint.”
